Shelf Life of Raw Living Spirulina
Microbiological Shelf Life: From a microbiological perspective, Raw Living Spirulina remains safe to consume for up to 61 days, as verified by Kappa Labs, the official laboratories of the FDA and USDA.
Freshness Shelf Life: However, regarding freshness, consuming Raw Living Spirulina within ten days is recommended. This is due to its delicate cellular structure, which can be likened to tiny water balloons. The green part represents the balloon (Chlorophyll), while the inside water is blue (Phycocyanin). The cell walls gradually break down in the refrigerator after approximately seven to ten days, releasing the vital liquid nutrients (blue phycocyanin) into the jar. A bluish-dark liquid will appear at this stage, indicating that probiotic effects have begun.
Freezing Option: To significantly slow down this breakdown process, it is advisable to freeze the spirulina into single-serve portions using silicone ice cube trays. This method places the Spirulina into a state of “suspended animation,” halting the breakdown process.
